In August 2020, Airtel Kenya became the first mobile network operator to launch an entertainment app in the country, known as Airtel Tv.
Airtel tv is a free online streaming entertainment app exclusive for Airtel subscribers that allows them access lots of entertainment content including series, movies, documentaries, kids shows, sports and live TV content from their mobile phone.
It closely resembles other online streaming service providers including Netflix and Showmax among others, albeit some difference here and there.
- Airtel tv is only available to registered Airtel subscribers, and you need an Airtel line to sign up and access it's content.
- It is available as an app for both Android and iOS devices.
- It is absolutely free to use the service as long as you have Airtel Data bundles, and won't be charged any monthly subscription charges in order to use it.
In case you would like to try the app, kindly visit the play store and download it, then follow the few steps to sign up.
Ii is much easier to sign up using your Airtel Data, as this will allow the app to automatically pick up your number and register you, all you will have to do is accept terms and conditions and you're good to go.
The app asks for only three permissions; access contacts, manage phone calls and access photos and media on your devices. I denied it the first two permissions and the app still worked just fine.
Once signed up you will be welcomed by a rich library of entertainment content with lots of options to choose from, including featured, shows, movies and live TV.
Under the features tab you can also choose between Kenya's top 10, you need to watch this, local movies, just added for you, Blockbusters, We dare you, Hollywood shows, Faith, Afrocinema, Family & kids, Music, Sci-fiovers, Lifestyle, Bollywood plus, Laugh out loud, Documentaries and finally Fresh and hot.
You can also choose to go live by selecting any of your favourite live shows among the many in the given list.
In order to save data bundles you have a number of video quality options to choose from in settings. They are the High, Medium, low and data saver playback options.
Apart from being absolutely free except for data, the app is also 100% free from ads, giving you that premium feel just like any other online streaming service.
The only limitation here is that you have to use an Airtel line, and cannot be streamed on wifi except on your Airtel mobile number.
Despite that we feel this is a bold move by Airtel to give it's customers something more than just ordinary mobile services, and considering that online content is still quite an expensive affair in the country we must thank them for this Noble and bold move.
Do we see other network operators following suit? We don't think that other key mobile network operators in the country will be bold enough to try such a move, but if Airtel Tv picks up and becomes successful then other will have no option but to follow suit.
Another major challenge that Airtel Kenya needs to look into is their Network signal across the country, for it won't make any sense to buy their highly affordable data and not get to use them due to a poor Network signal.
